This Night Owl NOB3X 3x Night Vision Binocular offers high performance optics in a superbly compact body. The number of lens elements used in the design of this Danubia Night Owl night vision unit, along with premium lens coating ensures a crisp image, with minimal internal reflection. The binocular housing is finished in rubber for easy handling, making it ideal for viewing wildlife at night and the power and infra red switches have been positioned within easy reach of the index finger when holding the binoculars to the eye. The focusing wheel is in the middle of the binoculars which again, makes it easy to use and the rubber surround on the eyepieces make them very comfortable to hold against the eye for long periods of time The Danubia Night Owl NOB3X night vision binocular offers 3x magnification and uses a CR123 battery (Not Included). The Nob3x Night Vision Binoculars have objective lens caps with tiny pinholes in them, which are designed for daylight, as removing the caps in daylight damages the unit.
Night Vision works by light coming into the device from the objective lenses which is then focused onto the Image Intensifier tubes. The front of these tubes contain photo cathode which converts the light into electrons and the voltage from the battery transfers the electrons into the phosphorous screens, which in turn illuminate with an image. The image seen through Night Vision Binoculars isn't quite as clear as standard optical binoculars, as the screen can give light and dark spots which are caused by the Intensifier tube; this is quite normal. The image will fall away slightly to the edge as the centre of the image is the most intense, but this is corrected as much as possible by using top quality optics.
How Does it Work
The ambient light, such as the moon and stars is gathered by the lens of the Night Vision Monocular and then focused onto the image intensifier tube. The intensifier tube converts the gathered light into single electrons, which are then multiplied by a high voltage tube (17 kilovolt). These multiplied electrons strike a phosphorous screen in high numbers, which then activates the screens illumination and that's all there is to it, the amplified light signals can now be seen by the human eye.
Complete Darkness
The infra red illuminator is the only way to see an image in complete darkness and works like a flash light throwing out a beam that is invisible to the human and animal eye.
Half Moon
This gives quite a significant amount of ambient light, which is then amplified by the internal Electronic Intensifier Tubes. This means that the infra red beam, is not so critical and the binoculars can help see a person-sized object at about 300 yards away.
Starlight - No Moon
If you are relying on the stars for ambient light, then you can still see a person sized object from 200 yards away, but if you then use the infra red beam, target recognition will be much better.
Urban Environment Man-Made Light Source)
Street lights and headlights will generally not damage the intensifier tube if a safe enough distance away, but it is recommended that the unit isn't pointed directly at artificial lights. A fair rule of thumb is that any man-made light source that is more than 30 yards away, won't damage the tubes.
