  • About 35mm equivalent wide-standard prime for Sony E APS-C
  • F1.4 aperture for low light and soft backgrounds
  • 13 elements including three SLD and two aspherical
  • Quiet stepping motor autofocus with eye detection
  • 330g, 52mm filter thread
  • Focuses to 25cm
  • Dust- and splash-resistant mount

The Sigma 23mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Sony E is a fast wide-standard prime for APS-C cameras. It gives about a 35mm equivalent view, which many photographers treat as the one lens that does almost everything, and the F1.4 aperture lets you keep shooting when the light drops. At 330g it balances well on an a6700, a6400 or ZV-E10 II.

Image quality

The optical design has 13 elements in 10 groups, including three SLD and two aspherical elements. They keep colour fringing and distortion under control, and Super Multi-Layer Coating helps hold contrast when you shoot into the light.

Bokeh and low light

At F1.4 you can blur a busy background behind a person or a plate of food, and the nine-blade rounded aperture keeps out-of-focus highlights soft and round. The same aperture gives you around two stops more light than an F2.8 zoom.

Autofocus and video

A stepping motor drives the focus group quickly and quietly, and it works with the camera's face and eye detection. Focus is internal, so the lens does not change length as it focuses, which helps on a gimbal.

Size, handling and close focus

It weighs 330g and measures 65.8 x 78.9mm, with a 52mm filter thread. It focuses down to 25cm, for a maximum magnification of 1:7.3, and the mount is sealed against dust and splashes.

Who it's for

This is for photographers who want one small, bright lens for everyday pictures, from street and travel to food, interiors and environmental portraits. The a6700 has in-body stabilisation; the a6400 and ZV-E10 II do not. If you prefer a slightly tighter, more classic standard view, the Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC DN is lighter still. If you would rather have a zoom, the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN covers this focal length at F2.8.

Also available for Canon RF and L-Mount.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Sigma 23mm F1.4 equivalent to on Sony E?

It gives about the same view as a 35mm lens on full frame.

Is the Sigma 23mm F1.4 a good everyday lens?

Yes. A 35mm equivalent view is wide enough for street, travel and interiors but natural enough for people, which is why it is a common choice as a single lens.

Sigma 23mm F1.4 or Sigma 18-50mm F2.8?

The 18-50mm is more flexible and lighter. The 23mm gathers around two stops more light at F1.4, so it is better in dim light and gives a shallower depth of field.

Sigma 23mm F1.4 or Sigma 30mm F1.4?

The 23mm is wider, at a 35mm equivalent, and suits everyday and street work. The 30mm is closer to a 50mm view, a little tighter for portraits and details.

Does the Sigma 23mm F1.4 have image stabilisation?

No. It relies on in-body stabilisation where the camera has it.

How heavy is the Sigma 23mm F1.4 for Sony E?

330g.

What filter size does the Sigma 23mm F1.4 take?

52mm.

What comes in the box with the Sigma 23mm F1.4?

The LH554-01 petal lens hood, front cap and rear cap.
