Thornfield HouseSigma 17mm F4 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Sony E
Our Price: £509.00
The Sigma 17mm F4 DG DN Contemporary for Sony E is one of the smallest full-frame ultra-wide primes you can buy. At 220g and around 5cm long it is part of Sigma's all-metal I series, and on an a7 IV, a7C II or a7R V it makes a very light kit for travel, street, interiors and vlogging.
The barrel, focus ring and aperture ring are machined metal, and a magnetic metal lens cap comes in the box. Even with that build it is light enough to leave on the camera all day.
It focuses down to 12cm, for a maximum magnification of 1:3.6. You can get very close to a foreground subject and still show a wide sweep of background, which is useful for food, details and handheld vlogging.
The optical design has 9 elements in 8 groups, with two SLD and three aspherical elements. A quiet stepping motor drives the autofocus for stills and video.
There is a manual aperture ring and an AF/MF switch. The mount has a rubber seal against dust and splashes, and the 55mm filter thread is shared with several other I series lenses.
This suits travellers and vloggers who want an ultra-wide view in the smallest package. If you want more light for night shots, the Sigma 20mm F2 DG DN is two stops brighter, and the Sigma 24mm F3.5 DG DN is the same size with a slightly tighter view and 1:2 close focus.
Also available for L-Mount.

Yes. It is wide enough to frame yourself at arm's length, it is very light, and it focuses as close as 12cm.
It is possible, but F4 is slow for the night sky. The 20mm F2 or 14mm F1.4 are much better for stars.
The 17mm is wider, smaller and lighter. The 20mm is two stops brighter, so it is better in low light and for the night sky.
It has a rubber-sealed, dust- and splash-resistant mount. Sigma does not describe the rest of the lens as weather sealed.
220g.
A magnetic metal lens cap, the LH576-03 metal hood, a standard front cap and rear cap.
