A floating optical system ensures good picture quality at all focal lengths and with the super UD glass elements the lens largely eliminates distortion and abrasions, the ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly and with full-timed manual override allows the user to adjust the focus without leaving AF mode.
The almost circular diaphragm on the Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM lens enhances background blur, which makes the subject stand out of the picture, creating an almost 3D effect and the image stabalisation allows shutter speeds of up to three stops higher to be used, making it ideal for use in low light.
