DS Technology

Canon’s DS (Defocus Smoothing) coating has been strategically used on two elements within the lens to achieve extra defocus rendering. This is a recognisable characteristic of the DS lens as out of focus highlights become soft discs of light – giving full focus to your foreground subject. You can benefit from this technology when using the widest aperture, however, the coating slightly decreases light transmission giving a T stop of T2.2.

Fast Autofocus

Featuring fast USM (Ultra Sonic Motor) technology to drive a faster, smoother and silent autofocus. The mechanism locks on to a subject and allows for fluent transition when recording video, as well as clear, sharp stills. The addition of the Lens Control Ring gives you extra control over customising settings, including ISO, aperture and shutter.

Sharp Images

The optical arrangement of the Canon 85mm features both aspherical and UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) lens elements. The clever order and technology of the lenses reduces optical aberrations and distortion, including chromatic and spherical. Collectively, the glass elements ensure optimum image quality, with edge-to-edge sharpness and high-contrast.

BR and ASC Technology

The large aperture of this lens has been taken into account as Canon have incorporated BR (Blue Spectrum Refractive) optics to contradict colour aberrations and deliver excellent rendering performance. An ASC (Air Sphere Coating) has also been applied to the lenses to prevent effects of flare and ghosting when working with bright light sources.
